Your digestive system breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and provides your body with the energy and building blocks it needs to function. Working together, your mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and gut microbiome all play important roles in supporting overall health.
Healthy digestion affects much more than your stomach. Learning how your digestive system connects with your immune system, liver, metabolism, hormones, and overall wellness can help you better understand the importance of lifelong digestive health.
Digestive health is influenced by many everyday factors, including nutrition, hydration, physical activity, stress, sleep, medications, food intolerances, infections, the balance of gut bacteria, and underlying health conditions. These factors can affect digestion, nutrient absorption, bowel habits, energy, and overall well-being.
Because your digestive system works closely with many other body systems, improving one area of health often supports many others. Understanding these connections can help you make informed lifestyle choices that support lifelong digestive and gut wellness.

The liver plays a vital role in digestion by producing bile, which helps break down and absorb fats. It also processes nutrients absorbed from your digestive tract, stores energy, and supports metabolism. Learning more about liver health can help you better understand how closely it works with your digestive system.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Stomach and Spleen work together within the Earth element and play a central role in transforming nourishment into energy.
The emotional connection goes beyond digestion. TCM associates this system with worry, anxiety, overthinking, pensiveness, rumination, brooding, and thoughts that become difficult to let go of. Excessive or prolonged thinking is traditionally described as causing Qi to become “knotted” or stuck, affecting the Spleen-Stomach system.
In Reiki and other energy-wellness traditions, the heart chakra is associated with the heart/chest region and emotional themes involving love, compassion, relationships, emotional connection and the processing or release of difficult emotions.
Reiki practices may incorporate the heart chakra when working with emotions such as sadness, anxiety, anger or emotional distress, with the intention of supporting relaxation, emotional balance and overall energetic well-being. The International Center for Reiki Training specifically describes placing the hands over the heart chakra and solar plexus chakra while using Reiki when uncomfortable emotions arise.

The spleen is a small organ located in the upper-left abdomen, behind the stomach and beneath the ribs. Although it sits near the digestive organs, the spleen is primarily part of the lymphatic and immune systems. It helps filter the blood, removes old or damaged red blood cells, stores certain blood cells and platelets, and supports the immune system's response to infection.
The spleen provides an important connection between blood health, immune function, and whole-body wellness. Its close location and relationship with abdominal organs also make it useful to understand when learning how different body systems work together. Learning what the spleen actually does helps separate its Western medical functions from the very different role attributed to the “Spleen” within Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Traditional Chinese Medicine views the Spleen differently from Western medicine. In TCM, the Spleen and Stomach form an interconnected Earth-element system involved in receiving nourishment and transforming food into the Qi and energy the body needs.
The emotional connection is especially interesting. TCM associates the Spleen-Stomach system with worry, overthinking, excessive thinking, rumination, anxiety, and repeatedly dwelling on thoughts or experiences. TCM World describes this system as processing not only food, but also the many experiences and information we take in.
From this traditional perspective, nourishing ourselves involves more than what we eat—it also includes becoming aware of what we continually carry, process, and “chew on” mentally and emotionally.
These are traditional TCM concepts and are different from the anatomical functions attributed to the spleen in Western medicine.

From an energetic wellness perspective, the upper abdominal area provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between stress, emotions, personal energy, and inner balance.
Reiki can be used as a gentle complementary practice to encourage relaxation, emotional awareness, and energetic balance. Reiki teachings commonly include working with energy centers such as the solar plexus, an area often explored in connection with confidence, personal power, self-esteem, worry, fear, and emotional tension.
This creates an opportunity to slow down and notice: What am I holding onto? What am I continually worrying about? Where could I use greater trust, confidence, and peace?
